Abstract. Galactoglucomannan (GGM) from spruce was studied with respect to the degradation behavior in alkaline solution. Three reference systems including galactomannan from locust bean gum, glucomannan from konjac and the linear water-soluble carboxymethyl cellulose were studied with focus on molecular weight, sugar composition, degradation products, as well as formed oligomers, to identify relative structural changes in GGM. Abstract Water-soluble native O-acetyl galactoglucomannan (GGM) from spruce is a polysaccharide that can be produced in an industrial scale. To develop GGM applications, information is needed on its stability, particularly under acidic conditions.

Spruce galactoglucomannan (GGM), the main hemicelluloses in softwood cell walls, are an abundantly available, emerging sustainable The galactoglucomannan had a number average degree of polymerization of approximately 30, and on complete acid hydrolysis it yielded D-mannose, D-galactose and D-glucose in the ratio 4.5 : 1.3 : 1.0. The structural determination of this polysaccharide by methylation analysis and 13 C n.m.r. suggested that it is a linear glucomannan with α-D-galactopyranosyl residues as single side units. 2015-08-25 Water-soluble O-acetylated galactoglucomannan (GGM) isolated from spruce thermomechanical pulp (TMP) by hot-water extraction was characterized by 1D and 2D (homo- and heteronuclear) NMR analysis.

Galactoglucomannans (GGMs) constitute the principal hemicellulose type in softwoods, amounting to 14 to 20% of the wood (Willför et al. 2005). 2001-04-12 Preparation of Galactoglucomannan Derivatives. Cationic GGMs (C-GGM, Fig. 1B) were prepared by dissolving GGMs into water (10 wt%) heated to 50°C, and by adding 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (EPTMAC) to the solution to achieve a targeted DS of 0.05. Aqueous NaOH (4 wt% of dry GGMs) was added after 20 min. as a 30% solution.

Determination of galactoglucomannan

The hydroxyl groups in locations C2 and C3 in mannose are partially substituted by acetyl groups. Abstract. Native galactoglucomannans (GGMs), which were isolated from thermomechanical pulping waters of Norway spruce, were modified through cationization, carboxymethylation, and imination at the reducing end with a primary long-chain hydrocarbon amine. The derivatives were tested for their papermaking properties. Acetyl-galactoglucomannan has been reported to have an approximate DP between 100–150 (Timell, 1967), equivalent to a molecular weight (M w) around 16 000–24 000 Da. It has a backbone of β-(1→4)- d -Man p and β-(1→4)- d -Glc p residues with α-(1→6)- d -Gal p and acetyl side-groups.

In the present study, galactoglucomannan (GGM) is adsorbed to wood cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and filtered and dried or hot-pressed to form nanocomposite films. The CNF/GGM fibril diameters are characterized by AFM, and the colloidal behavior by dynamic light scattering.
