There is a lesson to be learned here from Carl Schmitt. The division friend/enemy is never just a recognition of factual difference. The enemy is by definition always (up to a point) invisible : it cannot be directly recognised because it looks like one of us, which is why the big problem and task of the political struggle is to provide/construct a recognisable image of the enemy. For Schmitt, the paradox of sovereignty also has a parallax view in the difference between "unlimited authority" and the "entire existing order" hinging on the suspension of law from a kind of deconstruction through sovereign power (Schmitt 1985:12).Even so, when placing Schmitt and Agamben as interlocutors on the issue of what role a parallax view has on the meaning of sovereignty to the one Where Zizek’s critique gets really shitty is by invoking Walter Lippman. Lippman wrote a book back in 1922 called Public Opinion that argued that democracy was kind of pointless because people are stupid and lazy. Carl Schmitt cited the book in his critique of parliamentary democracy. Schmitt saw a similar alienation plaguing his own era.
