Comédies. VI. Pseudolus - Rudens - Stichus av Titus Maccius Plautus

While it is clear that Pseudolus is a slave, it is also clear that he is has to potential to be kind and helpful to those he cares about. As its eponymous clever slave telegraphs his every move to spectators, Pseudolus highlights the aesthetic, social, and performative priorities of Plautine comedy: brilliant linguistic play, creative appropriation of comic tradition, interrogation of convention and social norms, the projection of an air of improvisation and a fresh comic universe, and exploration of dramatic mimesis itself. If, as argued above, the first scene by and large goes back to the Greek original, where Pseudolus does not know about his young master’s love at first, the incoherent statement in the fourth act presumably goes back to Plautus, who invented the contract between Calidorus and the pimp and subsequently made Pseudolus attempt to steal money from the old man at a time before our play on account of this second contract. About two dozen comedies of the Roman playwright Plautus have survived the years, with many of them ending up rewritten and recast by other playwrights such as Moliere.

If, master, by your being silent, I could be in-formed what miseries are afflicting you so sadly, I would willingly have spared the trouble of two persons--of myself in asking you, and of yourself in answering me. Since, however, that cannot be, necessity compels me to enquire of you. Plautina longa fabula in scaenam venit.
